Pesticides are synthesised or biological agents used to manage the presence of weeds, pests and insects, on many agricultural crops.

Other than their intentional use, pesticides can contaminate the environment in various ways. They can sometimes be persistent and remain active for significant periods of time. Exposure to these compounds may affect non-target organisms (e.g. humans) and may even be fatal in some cases.
